One of my personal favorites and a must-visit in Shillong is Laitlum Canyon, undoubtedly the most Instagrammable spot in the city. Located about 24 km from the city center, Laitlum translates to ‘End of the Hills’, and it truly feels like standing at the edge of the world.

The view here is nothing short of breathtaking—velvety white clouds, rolling hills, and deep gorges that seem to stretch endlessly. The landscape will remind you of a scene straight out of the movie ‘The Sound of Music’. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, soaking in the beauty around you.

Laitlum Canyon is also famous for its stunning sunsets, making it the perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just looking to capture the perfect moment, this place has it all.

2. Shillong Peak – Where the Clouds Whisper Legends

Rising to an elevation of 1,965 meters, Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya and one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the entire Northeast. Located about 11 km from Shillong city, a short detour along the scenic route toward Mawphlang Sacred Grove leads you to this cloud-kissed summit.

As you ascend, the air grows cooler, and the panorama expands. At the top, you're rewarded with a 360-degree view that stretches across the entire Shillong cityscape, cascading waterfalls, the distant Himalayan ranges, and even the Bangladesh plains on a clear day. A viewing tower with a telescope offers an even closer glimpse into the unfolding landscape—making it a photographer’s dream.

But Shillong Peak is not just about the views. It holds deep mythological and cultural significance. Due to the location’s proximity to an Indian Air Force base, entry is regulated. Visitors must present valid ID cards, and cameras need to be deposited at the check post. Foreign nationals are currently not permitted due to security protocols.

3. Elephant Falls – Shillong’s Most Famous Waterfall

Just a short drive from Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls is one of the most popular tourist spots in Shillong. Known in Khasi as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (meaning Three-Step Waterfalls), it features three beautiful levels of cascading water, each more stunning than the last.

The falls got their English name from a large elephant-shaped rock that once stood nearby, which was sadly destroyed in an earthquake in 1897. Still, the name stuck—and so did the charm.

The first fall is hidden and gentle, the second is slim and serene, but the third fall steals the show, rushing down a steep rock face surrounded by lush greenery. To reach the bottom, you'll walk down about 150 steps, but the view is worth every one.

The area is a sensory delight—a kaleidoscope of colors, aromas, and sounds. From street performers to lively vendors, there's never a dull moment here. The market is a haven for local handicrafts, offering everything from beautifully woven Khasi and Jaintia shawls and bags to intricate handmade jewelry. The name "Umiam" means ‘water of tears’ in the Khasi language, tied to a fascinating local legend. According to the story, two sisters from heaven traveled to Meghalaya, but one got lost. The other, grieving for her, cried so much that her tears formed the lake once she reached the region.

Opened in 2003, the Don Bosco Museum offers an insightful look into the history and culture of the Northeastern states of India, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
